Dental Exam

Regular dental examinations are vital for early detection and prevention of not only dental problems but also more serious issues such as oral cancer.

What Does a Dental Exam Involve?

A dental examination is a comprehensive evaluation of your oral health performed by a dental professional. It typically includes:

  • Oral Inspection: A visual examination of your teeth, gums, tongue, and the inside of your mouth to check for signs of decay, gum disease, or oral abnormalities.
  • X-Rays: Radiographs are often taken to provide a more detailed view of your teeth, jawbone, and surrounding structures, helping identify hidden issues.
  • Evaluation of Bite and Jaw: Assessing your bite and jaw alignment to detect issues like bruxism (teeth grinding) or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  • Cancer Screening: Checking for signs of oral cancer, including abnormal tissue changes or growths.

How Often Should I Attend?

The frequency of dental exams depends on your overall oral health and any specific concerns. For years dentists have advised patients to attend every six montHs. However, some patients, especially those with a history of dental problems or ongoing treatments, may need more frequent visits, whereas others who have excellent oral hygiene and are classed as lower risk may not need to be seen as often.

Dr Dentith will advise how frequently you should be seen after doing a comprehensive exam.
